BUU Tuesday Truths

Are the seven principles of our UU covenant a language of love?

In his Prime Time video for June 7th, Rev. Matthew suggests that they are just that. He goes on to say that he believes that each of the seven principles challenge us to always learn to love. CLICK HERE to watch that video.

What do you say? And what do we say at Borderlands UU together?
In The Five Love Languages by the Rev. Gary Chapman, he names several distinct ways that we can experience love: acts of service, receiving gifts, words of affirmation, quality time, and physical touch. He developed this model as he believes that, "The most common issue in any relationship is the communication barrier." Realizing that each person gravitates to one of these five as the means for feeling loved is one way to overcome this barrier.

Similarly, our seven principles name distinct ways that Unitarian Universalists choose to be in relationship. Yet, we we don't often look at our seven principles as concerning love. In fact, they do not mention it directly anywhere. Reflecting on this, Rev. Matthew replies,
"Our principles don't overtly speak of love, because individually and all together they are a language of love."
What do you believe? Below is a poll to share which if any of our seven principles speak of love. Which one is a means for you to express and feel loved?
1st Principle
We affirm and promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person;

2nd Principle
Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;

3rd Principle
Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;

4th Principle
A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;

5th Principle
The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;

6th Principle
The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;

7th Principle
Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.
