Ring Out 2020

It is the tradition of our Borderlands UU community to ring out the year.

This is our annual opportunity to pause, reflect, and remember those we have lost during the year. It is also our moment to acknowledge with intention what we are going to bring forward with us into the new year.

Meditation on Losses

We practice three remembrances each year, one for those well known, one for those unjustly taken, and one for those we personally hold dear in our lives. A few names will be offered for each remembrance, say them aloud to invoke them and inspire more names and faces to come to you. Speak aloud all those that come to you in each remembrance.

Second Remembrance: Unjustly Taken

All who died crossing the desert seeking safety in the United States.

All who died from contracting COVID-19.

Name aloud those in your heart.

Third Remembrance: Those Held Dear

Name aloud those who you hold still, though they have died.

Trust that each person you name is with you still thought they have departed.

Contemplation on Events

Click on the video below to hear "Auld Lang Syne" and witness images invoking the events of this year. As you do, ponder the question: what should be left behind and what should be held onto in the new year?

Ringing Out 2020

Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
The flying cloud, the frosty light:
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.

-Alfred, Lord Tennyson,
"Ring Out, Wild Bells"
When you feel ready to ring out 2020 - leaving behind somethings and taking with you others - click on the play button below to hear the chimes of Big Ben ring.
Breathe with each of the 12 resounding chimes knowing that as you do may leave behind 2020 and take with you all that you need.
